Name: Jillian Guyette
Neighborhood and City: Mt. Airy, Philadelphia
Twitter: I’m so bad at keeping up with twitter
Woman I Admire: My mother
Go-to Outfit: I am definitely a denim addict, with a closet that is mostly borrowed from the boys, and my outfits are totally dictated by what my day is like, or what kind of shoot I’m doing.
Most typically my uniform consists of a good pair of jeans, a menswear flat, and a sweater or button down.
Can't Live Without Product: Benefit’s “benetint”, I’ve used it religiously since high school
Cocktail of Choice: most of the time it’s “the Jill”: St-Germaine, vodka, squeeze of lime, topped with seltzer
Travel Destination You’re Dreaming of: Lisbon
Current Craving: Chocolate Avocado Mousse
Best Advice: I tell myself “you’re a big brave dog” anytime I get anxious, works pretty well.
De-Stress Technique: a hot bath and a very large glass of wine. I also practice yoga regularly, but the wine is probably more accurate.
Favorite Track On Your Current Playlist: Right now I’m pretty stuck on “What It Look Like” by Skizzy Mars, and the latest Dawes album.
What are the three words that best capture you?
Energetic, perfectionist, and extraordinarily sensitive. I definitely fall into that category of the “extroverted introvert”.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Usually my dog. Although mostly she makes it hard to get out of bed she’s extra cute in the morning.
In your words, what is your company and what is its mission?
A Better Happier St. Sebastian is an extension of myself. It’s always evolving and incorporating new things that I’m drawn to or excited about. Whether it’s recipe based or lifestyle, it’s an ongoing reflection of what’s happening for me and my photography at the moment.
What was the moment you knew you had to create your company?
My husband Robert and I started collaborating on Better Happier in 2012. It was a way for us to work on recipes together, challenge each other and collaborate in a visual way that I think we were both really craving at the time.
That being said, it’s changed a lot since the beginning, especially in the past year. While I manage the bulk of it all, Better Happier is a reflection of us as a unit, my evolution as a photographer, and the home we’ve created and are continuing to create.
What was your biggest doubt before starting your company?
As a working photographer, also regularly creating content for an online journal, I am pretty much plugged in all the time. Photography itself is sort of a terrifying industry, and there is rarely an off switch. So many people are image makers, content creators, social media gurus, and it’s an overwhelming pool of talent to find yourself in. I had doubts that there was a place where my work would fit in, but once I started pursuing projects that spoke to me, I felt more confident than ever before. Still, I am my own biggest critic, and I find myself having to remind myself to trust my instincts. Things always manage to line up much better when I do.
